Indian Railway network is known to be the largest network in the world. Government releases many projects to provide one job opportunities to make one’s career in the field of Railways. The Indian railways are broadly divided and sub-divided into zones, divisions and departments, each controlling a particular function .Indian Railways is divided into 17 Zones, each of these zones is further divided in divisions with a total of 68 Divisions. . Every division has a certain number of technical and non-technical departments, which form the base structure on which the railways function. Technical sections contains  civil engineering, mechanical engineering, signalling and telecommunication,  where as the non technical section includes account section, personnel management railway police(RPF), and traffic services. Each department has staff at different levels. The highest ranks consisits of Group A officers, and the downward ranks are group D workers.
Each zone is headed by a General Manager (GM).In same manner each railway division is also managed by  different Divisional Railway Manager (DRM). While considering the hierarchy there are  different divisional officers for the various departments viz. electrical, signalling, accounts, protection and safety etc.These officers are the subordinates of DRM, who contacts directly to the central railway ministry. And there are station masters who controls a station and the traffic in their jurisdiction.

The officers in railways is classified into 4 grades, they are- Grade - A, Grade - B, Grade - C and Grade - D Officers.

Group A

This is the primary level officers Indian railways. Recruitment  for thes  posts are done through civil service exam and engineering service exams conducted early by the union public service commission(UPSC).

Civil Service Examination

Through Civil Services exam, Group 'A' personnel are recruited for Following services :-

  • Indian Railway Traffic Service,
  • Indian Railway Accounts Service,
  • Indian Railway Personnel Service,
  • Railway Protection Force (RPF)

Combined Engineering Service

Through Combined Engineering Services Exam, Group 'A' personnel are recruited for Following services :-

  • Indian Railway Service of Engineers,
  • Indian Railway Stores Service,
  • Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers,
  • Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers,
  • Railway Service of Signal Engineers

UPSC SCRA Exam 

Group A officers are recruited by UPSC.Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers personnel are also recruited through UPSC Special Class Railway Apprentice Examination.

Group B

Group 'B' Officers are appointed by the promotion from are group 'C' officers.

Group C

Group 'C' officers are recruited by 19 Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) that operate under the control of Railway recruitment control board (RRCB).

RRB is the primary authority for the recruitement of various levels for the zonal railways and production units.
They recruit various group 'C' vacancies through technical and non-technical section exams.
Group 'C' technical services include Civil, mechanical, electrical engineering, signal and telecommunication etc.Non -technical services include, Clerks, Assistant Station Masters, Ticket Collectors, Train Clerks, etc.

  • Technical Cadre Examination

Indian Railway technical department exams are conducted by the various zonal recruitment boards to group "C' officers in technical category including different branches such as signalling, electrical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical and telecommunication etc.
The tests are designed according to the educational standards required for the post.In some cases there are no interviews, the candidates will be directly taken based on their performance in written exams however there different exam pattern based on the characteristics of the job. For some categories, written test may be followed by an Oral test (Viva) and for others a skill test or psychological test may also be conducted as required by the posts Job profile. All questions are multiple-choice objective type.
There may be more than one written test based on the number of applicants. If there are large number of applicants multiple selection process would be there to ensure the quality of the candidates who are being in taken.
After selection, the successful applicants are called for the verification of original documents and a panel of candidates would be recomended to the zonal divisions depending on the number of vacancies. The candidate has to pass the medical exam before being appointed.

  • Non-Technical Cadre Examination

Indian Railway Non-technical section exam is conducted by the various RRB's under different zones, which recruite officers to the group 'C' officers in the non-technical categories.  Different non-technical staffs include jobs such as clerks, station masters, ticket collectors, apprentices etc. Selection of these staff would be mainly based on written tests. Applicant has to be pass medical examination after the written test to ensure the minimum medical standards.

  • RPF Sub-Inspectors / Constables Examination

RPF Officrs and constables are appointed by the exam conducted national level annually by the RPF selection board. These are carried out in zonal railway sections. Candidates  hast to pass medical and physical tests before appointment.

Group D

Divisional level is taken care of the appointment to the group 'D' level.

The scheme of Railway Examinations(technical/Non-technical) generally consist of three stages:

  1. Computer based written exam. Depends on job profile there may be more than one exam
  2. Psychological Aptitude test and /or Interview
  3. Skill Test or Proficiency Test.

The first stage of the recruitment consists of written test. Nowadays most of the written tests are based on online computer test. Written test stages include multiple choice type question in which the candidate has to  choose the right answer from the given options.  The syllabus includes  mainly four subjects viz. reasoning , general knowledge, mathematics and english.For  technical posts, there will be technical questions for the written test. Certain number of candidates are shortlisted for the second stage those who are secured minimum cut off mark in the first stage.

The second stage may be includes oral test or interview and psychological aptitude test based on the requirement for the post. The psychological aptitude test is for just shortlisting purpose only however it is compulsory for many technical posts.

For the posts of clerical cadre and stenographer, skill test or proficiency test is also organized.After clearing the first and/or second stage(s) candidates are required to appear in the Typing Test and /or stenography test.

General Awareness:  History, Geography, General Science, Economy, Current Affairs, State General Knowledge, Computer and Information Technology etc..

Arithmetic Ability: Number System, HCF, LCM, Simplification, Decimal Fractions ,Ratio and Proportions, Percentage, Average, Pipes & Cisterns, Problems on Trains, Boats & Streams, Time and Distance, Time and Work, Profit and Loss, Average, Simple and Compound Interest, Menstruation (2D and 3D),Algebra, etc

Age and qualification Criteria

The aspirants need to be in age group of 18-27 yrs. The qualification criteria varies according to job profiles.
